Free Range Arts “Hoof & Eye” Scholarship
Application
“Hoof & Eye” Scholarships encourage emerging artists to leap from FRA retreats onto the printed page: in addition to a $200 reduction in registration fees, recipients will work directly with award-winning publishers, Alternatives: Canadian Environmental Ideas + Action or The New Quarterly: Canadian Writers and Writing, to develop an integrated arts project that explores working landscapes and the meaning of place.

What we need from you:
Please email the following to Susan Scott (sscott@wlu.ca):
- A one-page cover letter that states your interests in working landscapes or land issues and why working with visual artist Wesley Bates, writer Susan Scott, Alternatives or The New Quarterly would benefit your practice and research.
- Writing sample: 2 pages of prose or poetry (or a sample of each); excerpts from longer works are fine.
- Sample art work: 5 JPGS of your work (72 or 300 dpi) with captions or brief descriptions that set your work in context.
- Retreat registration form and $50 deposit. Click here for the form.
What you can expect from us:
We will notify successful candidates as soon as registration closes, 10 days before a retreat’s starting date. If for any reason a retreat is cancelled, we will work with you to explore your creative options by automatically applying your non-refundable $50 deposit towards a half-day workshop in Wesley’s studio-gallery.
*Since we are looking for the right “fit,” we strongly encourage you to research both magazines before firing off your cover letter.
